Safety in deep water

The ocean constitutes a wild environment with its niceties but also its dangers. Above all we must be careful and attentive to waves. To have fun, basic safety rules must be complied with.

Choosing the wave
In general a wave which breaks over all its length can’t be surfed. A wave is surf able if it breaks in a regular way. It’s called “Right” if it breaks on the right when you surf it and “left” otherwise.

Priority surfer
When two surfers catch the same wave, the surfer nearest the peak or breaking part of the wave has priority or right of way all along the wave. So the other surfer should pull off the wave because only one surfer is allowed.

A wave : 2 opposite breaking directions but one priority
A wave can have two opposite breaking directions. In this case, the first surfer standing on his board is given way.

A wave with 2 priorities
A wave can have two distinct breaking directions. In this case, both surfers are given way.
A surfer on the wave has priority
A surfer riding a wave has priority over a surfer paddling out.  However if the situation arises, he has the obligation to avoid a collision as he has the manoeuvrability.
Paddling out
A surfer paddling out must never obstruct someone else who is up and riding.
Line up
When waiting for a wave, a surfer mustn’t stay below the breaking point area of a wave called the line up (an informal line of surfers) because he may prevent the next surfer from taking off and jeopardize other surfers and himself. It’s better to wait for his turn beyond the line up. He will be able to anticipate the next waves.
Abide by signs and respect environment
Be aware of other sea users and always pay respect to swimmers. Surfers must watch the signs implemented on each beach to regulate the swimming area.Surfing is possible beyond the green flag with a red spot and bodyboard from the swimming zone limit to the green flag with a red spot. Every surfer must finally respect the environment and take his litter home in order to keep the sea and the beaches clean.
  Assistance
Surfing is an adventure with an inherent element of risk due to the naturally unstable environment of the ocean. That is why surfers must commit themselves totally to lending other surfers assistance in case of danger.
